Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is LeakfinderRT less expensive than products with similar capabilities?
A. First, we should be clear that there are no products with the capabilities of LeakfinderRT. Most leak noise correlators have dedicated hardware (black boxes) that do nothing but signal acquisition and processing for leak detection. As such, the market is relatively small, and they do not have the advantage of mass production. LeakfinderRT utilizes the fact that virtually all modern notebook computers are already equipped with a high resolution data acquisition device; namely the soundcard. Computers are a consumer product produced in mass volume which means that our hardware cost is very low compared to competing products. All our R&D went into the signal processing which is software based, and that is why it is so much more advanced than the current state of the art in correlators.
Q. You say you can accurately find leaks in low pressure PVC pipes at extremely low leaks rates, we dont believe you!
A. We are getting a lot of this and we understand that the reason behind this scepticism is user frustration with existing leak noise correlators. Our claims regarding LeakfinderRTs superiority for PVC pipes are based on extensively documented tests on actual pipes. The main reason behind LeakfinderRTs superiority is some novel signal processing technology and extremely low-noise hardware. This website has details of this testing with the computed correlation functions. If you really dont believe us but hope its true, buy our system, and if it doesnt work return it to us within 30 days, no questions asked.
Q. You say you dont need hydrophones for leak detection on PVC pipe up to 150mm (6) diameter, how can this be?
A. We have developed a new low frequency sensor that is specifically tuned for PVC pipes. This sensor attaches to magnetically hydrants or valves in the same way as a conventional accelerometer (the hydrants must still be pressurized). The sensor works, we have tested it extensively, and it is virtually bombproof. This device has detected joint leaks in PVC as low as 3 litres per minute at a pressure of 20 psi. For larger pipes, or quiet PVC leaks, we still recommend that our hydrophones be used.
Q. Will any notebook computer work to run LeakfinderRT?
A. Yes, with some qualifications. Our LeakfinderRT system now comes equipped with a built in USB sound card. The LeakfinderRT Mini will require a PCMCIA sound card (supplied with the system). Also the PC does not have to be of the notebook type, if you prefer you can use a regular desktop PC (equipped with a soundcard). We recommend a Pentium V, or higher, computer for speed. We offer two computers, a standard notebook, and a rugged tablet computer by Microslate.
Q. How long will it take to train a user to operate the system?
A. We have trained people in as little as 30 minutes, but leave time for a couple of hours to be on the safe side. We also have an extensive training course that goes through all aspects of correlation, including the physics and signal processing background so that operators can truly understand the theory of what they are doing in the field.
Q. When doesnt LeakfinderRT work?
A. No correlator will find all leaks. Typically the main reasons a leak may not be found would be if there are large services in the area that are duplicating a leak sound, and thus overpowering the leak noise. This is a common problem, for any correlator, and the only way to solve it is to come back at night when the service may not be drawing as much water, or to turn the service off.
Q. What kind of warranty do you offer?
A. The wireless hardware has a limited 1 year parts and service warranty. Damage due to abuse is not covered. If a computer is purchased with the system, the manufacturers warranty applies, which is normally 90 days. We also offer extended service plans that cover accidental as well as manufacturing defects.
Q. What about software updates?
A. We offer complimentary software updates so that your system is permanently updated with the latest technology.
